What are we doing here, Mister Custer

I write for business at my SparkMate.net site.

Tonight I watched “Talking Heads” on the ABC site tonight. TThere I learned about Paula Constant. She walked 10 thousand kilometres across Europe and Africa.

I gelled with everything she said, in particular that you need to be active a lot before you can work out your place in the world.

I commented on Paula’s blog post. I promised to write for myself. Here it is.

Yes I love technology toys. But it is the links to people over the world that appeals to me most.

I consume content of all varieties, mostly blogs using Google Reader.

I call my thoughts brain farts, not to downplay them but to show they just turn up and need to be captured.

An easy and ubiquitous capture method is my goal. Here are my current favourites:

  • on my Android phone, Evernote and WordPress for Android
  • on paper, in my office the GTD system waxing and waning
  • on my computer/the cloud: blogs, Google mail and docs

Ok, brainfarts are captured. What to do with them? This is where my effectiveness falls down.

I like the thought of mind-maps, digital and paper.

My daily newspaper; 80% relevant

For the past couple of years, I have been consuming my information content in two media forms:

  1. Web logs
  2. Podcasts

Both of these can be finely tailored to include only things of interest to me. I estimate that I get it right 80% of the time.

This means that at any given time, I have access to information that strongly educates and entertains me.

Compare this to my estimate of other media like books, magazines, and TV. I reckon that only 20% of these get it right.

PS Before the internet ruled my retail therapy was books and magazine on whatever I was interested in at the time. My new media has replaced this. I have not bought a book or magazine for years.
